ELN Philosophy

ELN provides environmental legal services differently than most other law firms.

First, ELN promises an honest evaluation of our capabilities. We will refer clients to other attorneys or professionals if that is in the best interests of the client.

Second, we often include technical and scientific experts as part of your team as a means to keep your legal costs to a minimum.  Our experience is that with proper legal supervision, qualified experts can address environmental problems as well as or better than many law firm associates or paralegals.  Clients are not billed for associate development nor do we assign work to inexperienced attorneys with high billable hour requirements.  As a result of our experience with the environmental consulting community, we offer significant value in the formation of a team that best suits a client’s specific needs.  When the more complex case calls for a team of attorneys, we can associate with the most qualified people available.

Third, the economics of our office are geared towards our client’s interests, not our own.  We run an efficient, low overhead business that offers lower fees compared to other firms.  Our compensation model is more consistent with our client’s finances, and is not driven by what other high-paid partners are making.  Our fee options are highly flexible, including hourly rates and flat fees, as well as value- and task-based fees.

Fourth, we emphasize and encourage preventative environmental compliance measures.  We understand environmental laws and regulations as well as the legal process.  While we are qualified to evaluate whether litigation is a good option, and while we offer services in support of litigation, we will refer clients to qualified trial attorneys when litigation is necessary.  Our experience is that litigation is a poor way to solve environmental problems, and should be a last resort.

These are the core values that influence our practice of environmental law. If you have any questions or if you need further information please contact us.
